So things have been crazy. I arrived here what it seems like not too long ago, went on a staff retreat, and then was bombarded by first week activities left and right. It is really important in the beginning of the semester to "hit it hard." More people are willing to try new things out in the beginning of the semester rather then mid-way through it, especially Freshmen.
During the first week (before school started) we spent a lot of time tabling, which basically means putting Cru's logo out there, getting people to fill out survey's, which would in turn let us set up appointments with them. In addition, it was really important to start to meet with people as soon as possible. The longer the time that passes between the surveys and the actual "contact" you make with them, the likelihood that they meet with you is not as high.
Same deal with the second week. There was not much tabling but a lot of appointments. Also, this week is when a lot of our other meetings started. In addition to weekly meetings, Cru at UA offers community groups which are set up according to where you live. They act as a sort of Bible study and reflection time over the weekly message that was given at the meeting. This year we are wanting to launch Destino, a group made specifically for Latino/Hispanic students who would like to learn more about God. Many feel comfortable in a large weekly group setting, others do not. We want to appeal to those who do not.
This week was a lot of new things for me. It has been tiring but surprisingly refreshing to work here in Tucson. Last year was trying in so many ways, personally and ministerially speaking. It is nice to be in a place where I am surrounded by so many people full of wisdom and where this has been going on for awhile. It makes me realize just how new the ministry is in the Dominican Republic.
Well, I am writing this as I'm waiting for a girl to show up for an appointment. (I hope she does.) I haven't been stood up yet, just cancelled on, but I'm okay with that as long as you tell me in advance!
Okay :) Have a great weekend!
Oh, on top of all the newness I just moved into my new apartment. I am still sleeping on an air mattress. I do have a desk and a chair that a student gave me! Praise God! lol this morning the smoke detector went off because of smoke from the stove (I wasn't burning anything it's just ultra sensitive) and I was happy that I had a chair to stand on in order to turn the thing off! lol.. imagine if I didn't. Oh, to be thankful for the little things! :)
